About the Practica of Tango Salon

We have been experimenting since January at Tanguísimo a model for a práctica that focuses mainly on walk and musicality, inspired by concepts learnt during Jorge Díspari y María del Carmen Romero Workshops in Taipei in December 2010. We wish to share this “prototype” with all people that might be interested in it, and at the same time have Jorge y Marita instruct us for further steps. Enclosed are some guidelines we have settled for this práctica:

  • We divide the dance floor in three lanes. The outer lane is for walk with no figures and with mayor circulation. (NOTE that an ocho would be seemed as a “figure”, meaning that you should only do walk in this lane.) The second lane is for walk with no figures but with minor circulation, suitable for less experienced dancers. The inner lane is for all salon figures, always respecting the line of dance.
  • Please do not switch lanes during the same song. (If the couple ahead obstructs your path, just wait for them to continue.)
  • We will play two songs per set. It is likely that the two songs will be the same one repeating, in order for the attendees to get acquainted with the music.
  • You can dance with practice embrace, open or close embrace. We suggest to do the first song of each set with practice embrace.
  • We will play music from various orchestras. Mainly songs where beat, pause, double beat and counter beat are easier to identify.
  • The way of invitation follows the custom of the ‘40s: men stand in the middle and women sit around, and the man uses the “cabeceo” (eye contact) to invite the woman.
  • There is a “resting area” where you can drink something or chat. You can stay there if you want to take a rest.
  • NEW RULE BY JORGE: Women should be well dressed, and men in elegant sport (combination of jacket and pants); it can be without tie, but with shoes, pants, shirt and jacket.
Join us to enjoy embrace, walk and music!
